Family Shelters

Milly's PlaceCommunity Teamwork has long been a leader in the fight against homelessness. In 1983 CTI established the first shelter for homeless families in Greater Lowell, which remains in existence today under its new name Milly's Place. Two years later, CTI opened the Merrimack House to further address the needs of a growing homeless family population.

The mission of the Milly's Place and the Merrimack House is to assist homeless families to locate affordable housing and to become self-sufficient while providing a safe, and supportive environment. Our program offers educational, financial, emotional, parenting, and housing services. Milly's Place, formerly known as the Pawtucket House, and the Merrimack House can house up to twelve families, six at each site.

In addition to emergency services such as shelter and food, we also offer a wide array of social, educational, and enrichment programs. We strive to respond to the needs of our residents by assisting them with job training and educational opportunities, personal and financial counseling, information and referrals, housing assistance, as well as case management. We partner with the Lowell Adult Education Center to bring GED classes into the shelter twice a week from September through June.

Merrimack House Our in-house programs have expanded to include numerous enrichment activities for the children living at our shelters. Most often we have an average of twenty to twenty-five children living at our shelters at any given time. We also celebrate the diversity and ethnicity of all the children we serve, and no child ever goes without a birthday party which includes cake, ice cream, and goodies for everyone.

Volunteers play an integral role in our shelters. Their contribution to our program is greatly appreciated and often times immeasurable. Some volunteer opportunities include:

  • Child Care
  • Cleaning and maintenance
  • Household needs
  • Workshop/seminar assistance
  • Clerical support

Financial donations allow us to fill in budget shortfalls, purchase new equipment, and expand services to homeless families. All contributions are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated.
