The City of Lowell, Massachusetts is known as a melting pot, a place where people from different cultures or races live together in one community. Since the early 1800's, immigrants from many countries came to Lowell to start a new life. The Greek, French Canadian, and Polish immigrants came and joined the Irish to work in the city's Industrial mills. Today, newcomers include people from Southeast Asia including Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. These folks are joined by immigrants from Brazil, Portugal, Dominican Republic and many African countries like Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Cameroon, and the Ivory Coast. Its culturally diverse population is one of Lowell's greatest assets.

Since 2001, One Lowell, a program of Community Teamwork, has been dedicated to increasing the integration and self sufficiency of Lowell's many newcomers by strengthening civic participation, developing strong leadership and increasing access to vital services.

The Mission of ONE Lowell is to strive to be the voice that improves the life, opportunities and involvement of culturally diverse people in the Lowell Community. One Lowell's Values include:

  • Facilitate the integration, self-sufficiency, and respect of diverse individuals.
  • Promote engagement of refugees and immigrants in the Lowell community.
  • Strengthen education, employment opportunities and community leadership.
  • Assist others in providing culturally and linguistically accessible services.
  • Build partnerships with other organizations to serve this community.

Under the direction of Victoria Fahlberg, PhD, One Lowell is dedicated to helping break down the barriers that newcomers face by providing the tools they need to participate in civic and social aspects of life in a new country.
