LOWELL -- The Farmer's Market will have its 2006 grand-opening celebration Friday at the JFK Plaza in the shadow of City Hall.

The market opens for business at 9 a.m., and the official kickoff, hosted by Community Teamwork Inc. in partnership with the UMass Lowell Preventive Medicine Institute, begins at 11 a.m.

The festivities will include opening remarks by Mayor Bill Martin and a cooking demonstration led by Mambo Grill chef Frankie Descoteaux.

Other local celebrities and chefs are scheduled to show off their cooking skills and present their favorite recipes during the season.

The market, open every Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., has featured fresh local produce, herbs, flowers, preserves and crafts from the area's best farms for the past 26 years.

"The downtown area is a great location for the Farmer's Market because it brings an infusion of fresh produce to the city," said Connie Martin, CTI's associate executive director of community resources.

The Farmer's Market will be held every Friday until Oct. 20, with the exception of July 28, when the 20th Lowell Folk Festival takes over the downtown.
