Citizen
Schools is a creative and effective learning model that addresses
community needs while building student skills through hands-on experiential
learning activities. CTI's Citizen Schools Program, initiated in
the fall of 2004, is part of a National Network that connects middle
school students with adult volunteers to tackle real world projects
that are both educational and fun. Last year, 80 students from the
Wang Middle School participated in the program and this year we
plan to expand the program to the Robinson School in Lowell.
This
hands-on program offers students apprenticeships in areas like veterinary
medicine, computer science and technology, real estate, public art,
and more. Children apprentice with adults who are lawyers, web designers,
architects, etc. - exposing them to careers that allow them to design
web sites for their schools, organize public events, publish school
newspapers, and much more. This approach to learning helps students
develop the academic and leadership skills they need to do well
in school, get into college, and become leaders in their careers
and in their communities.
The
goal of Citizen Schools is to prepare students for leadership roles
in the 21st century. To achieve this goal, Citizen Schools has identified
four important objectives for students' success:
- Strengthen
academic skills
- Develop
personal leadership skills
- Facilitate
access to resources
-
Build community connections
