Case
Study: SHIFT CASE #47
Brian is a single man who had stable work for over 18 years. After
being laid off from his job due to a slow down in the amount of
work the company was getting, Brian applied for unemployment. Once
receiving unemployment, Brian's income would be over $1,000 per
month. However, while waiting to receive his first unemployment
check, Brian fell behind on his weekly rent for his room in a rooming
house. The rooming house rent was $110 per week. After being unable
to find work and not receiving unemployment after 4 weeks, the property
manager was having to begin the eviction process. Having stayed
with family and friends in the past and being unable to stay with
them again, Brian was facing the prospect of having to access emergency
shelter. The cost of an emergency shelter bed for a single individual
is $30-$40 per day or $900-$1200 per month. With the help of the
SHIFT Coalition, the property manager received $440 for the one
month's back rent and prevented this man from becoming homeless.
The SHIFT Coalition continues to facilitate a relationship between
the Brian and his landlord to ensure that he receives the support
and services needed to maximize his opportunity for stability. In
addition, the SHIFT Coalition will continue to track this man's
progress for 12 month's. With the help of the SHIFT Coalition, $440
was spent to preserve a man's housing rather than allowing him to
slip into homelessness at the cost of $900-$1200 per month. We believe
this is just one example that shows the overwhelming human and fiscal
impacts that the SHIFT Coalition's efforts are making.
